• Iris histrio is a slightly variable species. There are a number of forms that have been collected over the years. Only Iris histrio ssp. Histrio and Iris histrio ssp. Aintabensis have been in commerce. The others have been in the hands of enthusiasts
• It is not widely grown. This may largely be due to the availability of many nice blue hybrids. (may be some growing / tenderness issues). If you were choosing a blue species from a catalogue you would pick Iris histrioides ahead of histrio because of its large flower parts. That choice would be followed by some of the blue and violet hybrids
